Jean Paul Gaultier Vs Amy Winehouse

Music and Fashion have always been the best of friends and yesterday two of the most iconic players from both worlds came together in Paris in the form of Jean Paul Gaultier’s S/S ’12 Couture show. Gaultier described the collection as, “Punk Rock Couture”, a collection clearly inspired by the late, great Amy Winehouse. Inspired by, dedicated to and in celebration of one of the most iconic songstresses of our time.

As a massive Amy fan, I literally squealed with nostalgic delight when I saw the multicoloured beehives, fake beauty spots and heavily lined eyes bob down the catwalk. Gaultier’s infamous corsets of course featured heavily, they were teamed with skin tight pencil skirts and sharp pinstriped tailoring as well as being the frame for some of the more outlandish gowns. Aside from the classic 50′s rock influences the colourful collection combined a wealth of different materials; leather, lace, mesh and silk, all welded perfectly together by Gaultiers form fitting concoctions. The last models to walk donned black lace veils, a mark of respect perhaps? A symbolic reference to the fact that a lot of people are still in morning over the loss of such as talented and troubled soul. Either way, I loved it all, all 70 pieces of it even if it was impossible to feel sad when the encore was played out to the sound of Rehab.
