Keeping up with Karl Lagerfeld’s side projects is like keeping up with Joan River’s plastic surgery appointments: impossible. From helping design Dubai’s new fashion devoted island Isla Moda to appearing in Volkswagen adds in Germany, you may have thought that the Kaiser has done everything…WRONG.
Lagerfeld recently endeavoured to create a series of three commercials for Magnum, the European ice cream brand, in the US. The commercials’ star Rachel Bilson, from The O.C., plays a fashion model, ballet dancer, and art student for the respective commercials Photo Mood, Applause, and Art Class to promote the tasty temptations. Photo Mood also features Lagerfeld’s Chanel muse Baptiste Giabiconi as the photographer, while Lagerfeld himself remains behind the camera.
But wait a moment, Karl, stop sending us mixed messages! As I recall, ice cream or anything with sugar is not part of the Karl Lagerfeld diet. Well, the commercials are supposed to be about indulging in things that make you happy, and while Lagerfeld admits that he doesn’t eat ice cream, he admits that he “would eat ice cream if he could…After all, I’m a dress designer and I don’t wear dresses.” Solid defence, Karl. While I admit that Magnum ice cream is delicious, if you want to fit into you Chanel Haute Couture, it might be advisable to limit your indulgence (like Karl) to the commercials.
